I have one reason:
It’s awesome.
“The Breaks” by Kurtis Blow
Reasons why I knew I needed to post this song:
- On Friday, Barrett, my friend Colleen, and I went to the once-a-month club night called Rapture where they play lots of late 70s disco, early 80s new wave, early hip hop and funk. This came on.
- Then, while driving back from my cousin’s baby shower on 83rd in the South Side, this came on IMMEDIATELY after Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam with Full Force.
- While listening to this song in the car with my mother and sister, I asked, “Do you remember when the dance team sampled this song for one of our routines?” My mother paused and then said, “I know you didn’t like the team, but you girls had pretty good taste in music.”

Jean-Claude Vannier “Le Roi Des Mouches” (from L’Enfant Assassin Des Mouches 1972)
Let’s listen!

Evrysing: L’ Enfant Assasin des Mouches
In 1972, after creating music with Serge Gainsbourg including the 1970 arguable masterpiece Histoire de Melody Nelson, French composer Jean Claude Vannier made one of the most glorious, delirious, and baffling albums of the last half century. L’Enfant Assassin des Mouches, (The Child Killer of Flies) is a stunning and tightly composed pastiche of musique concrete, film score, carnival waltz, psychedelic rock, free jazz, lounge, etc. And be certain a great deal of emphasis should be placed on that “etc.”
Arguable? Arguable? Come on!
Agreed. Credit should go to composer/arrangers like Vannier and Michel Colombier with whom he collaborated, though.

Well, our two-night stand is over and it was a truly great time. People really seemed to love it and, for me, being a part of it was nothing short of amazing. Sam Shalabi, besides being a tremendous and inspiring talent, is a wonderful, sweet and hilarious man. Also…getting to share the experience with two of my longtime friends, Steven Balogh and Josh Stevenson (on electric bass and synth respectively), as well as some 24 or 25 new friends was a gift I don’t take for granted.

The reviews for the album have been very, very positive and I think some out-of-town (and possible out-of-country) shows may occur in the future…
