Crimson sunsets & golden dawns
One of my favorite seventies Beach Boys LPs.
She's got a hole in her head no one can see
Box Elders. Nice band. Only one release so far (and a 7” single at that) and I’m interested in hearing more. They, along with Crystal Stilts, (and to some extent Sic Alps)seem to be mining a 80’s Paisley Underground vibe (which is to say they are pulling most of inspiration from sixties psychedelic pop and garage).
I don't believe I'd ever change somehow
In 1970 Sinatra released this concept album that “charts the story of a middle-aged man in Watertown, New York, whose wife has left him with his children”.
All songs written by Bob Gaudio (The Four Seasons) and Jake Holmes (“Dazed & Confused”).
Poorly reviewed upon release and pretty much forgotten now, it’s remains one my favorites of the many,...
Seems like my shadow mocks every stride
Next Cheap Thrills DJ night Casa Del Popolo will be on Monday, September 22nd and will feature me playing stuff by bands like this…and unlike this.
Remember that law? When you had to put your shades...
A chalky under-taste.
Maybe this is old news…but Michael Bay is remaking Rosemary’s Baby??? What a TERRIBLE idea. Bad news.
There is absolutely no reason to remake this. To begin with, it was pefectly cast (Mia Farrow’s best performance ever, Ruth Gordon & Sidney Blackmer as the Castavets, Charles Grodin, Ralph Bellamy….JOHN CASSAVETES!) and the late sixties Manhattan setting, not to...
All sizzle, no steak
Currently reading a fantastic bio of this guy:
Andy Milligan
The book is titled The Ghastly One :The Sex-Gore Netherworld of Filmmaker Andy Milligan and it’s by a guy who worked with Milligan on his later films, Jimmy McDonough, who has also authored books on Neil Young and Russ Meyer (and wrote for the classy Juggs magazine).
The first two paragraphs:
“First, babe, a confession: I...
Psychedelic ghetto
Three excellent comps compiled by UK DJ Cherrystones. Great finds and obscuro favorites on these including, but not limited to: Pugh, Great Bear, Frijid Pink, Breakout, Ennio Morricone, Shocking Blue, Mashmakhan, George Brigman, and Chrome.
People keep coming around
Felt (feeling) a bit rough after the show last night. Had fun (mostly), Josh Stevenson AKA Magneticring was a real treat. It’s nice seeing him around.
Got work this morning and the first thing I wanted to do was listen to the first Tindersticks album. Man, what a great record.
Night emissions
Featuring members of The Intelligence and Fruit Bats, Factums play dark and industrial night jamz. You will dig if you have dug Cabaret Voltaire and/or Chrome.

Hey cowboy
It’s been 13 months since Lee Hazlewood died.
A subjective list of necessary Hazlewood LPs:
Friday’s Child (1965)
The Very Special World of Lee Hazlewood (1966)
Lee Hazlewoodism: It’s Cause and Cure (1967)
Love and Other Crimes (1968)
Something Special (1968)
Cowboy in Sweden (1970)
Requiem For An Almost Lady (1971)
Poet, Fool or Bum (1973)

Children's story ideas
“One Clam, Two Clam”
basic kids rhyming book. Fun because a clam gets locked in the bathroom at one point. Teaches kids to count…clams.
“Beans, The Laziest Beagle Of All”
Beans just lays around sleeping and eating, refusing to go out and play with his friends, until one day they find a huge pile of bones and…well actually Beans sleeps through the whole thing...
This old world is in a terrible condition
One of the first things I did after moving to Montreal 2 years ago was visit Backroom Records, the little record store in a Mile End alley run by fellow ex-Vancouverite Warren Hill. The purpose of my visit was to pick up the Washington Phillips compilation he’d put out on Mississippi Records, the archival vinyl-only label he helps run with a friend from Portland.
I soon became a weekly...
Alright. Here’s the video for “Caan” starring Robert Dayton, Johnny Uljevic, the puppet master and my old band Nasty On.
From the 2002 album Citysick.
I, changed
I’ve have had it with this shit. It’s mine. No more Butterknives. It’s Grimmertown, baby, and I built it.

John and I just launched Tumbltape. It’s similar to Muxtape, but instead of uploading music, it turns your Tumblr audio posts into a playlist. Check it out, leave some feedback and spread the word!
Fantastic!
Now THIS is awesome. Well fucking done.
mmm-hmmm
I gotta find a beach house, baby
It is HOT! And I’ve been busy, busy working on the Land Of Kush recording this week. Nice night last night sitting on the railroad tracks, drinking beer with friends Balogh and Stevenson.
Time to go get an ice cream cone with K & A.
Here’s a track from probably one of my top 5 favorite records of all time.
Tossed & found
Trunk Records. INCREDIBLE label. Instead of simply reissuing out-of-print classics, Trunk specialize in unearthing and then releasing (for the first time most of the time) lost soundtracks, avant-garde library gems, spoken word porn and weirdo British 60’s and 70’s television music. I seriously love almost everything they’ve (re)birthed, but here are 10 extraordinary instances...
Nebulous landscape
In a world where compilations of obscure 60’s garage and psych rock and pop are as plentiful as cigarette butts on the sidewalk outside of a nightclub, it’s always a small pleasure to come upon one that actually renews one’s interest in the genre(s) and sustains interest throughout it’s lengthy running-time.
